Boko Haram gunmen this morning Sunday September 29th stormed the student dormitory of the College of Agriculture in Gujba, Yobe State, shooting students as they slept, killing at least 30 of them. The death toll could be way higher as several dead bodies were recovered from hostels, classrooms, bushes and corners around the school.

Area Military spokesman Lazarus Eli confirmed the incident and said that security forces have been deployed to the school to protect surviving students until they can all leave the campus. Eli said the attack was carried out by “Boko Haram terrorists who went into the school and opened fire on students while they were sleeping"

2015: Jonathan has won already –Dokubo-Asari

2015: Jonathan has won already –Dokubo-Asari
From AIDOGHIE PAULINUS, Abuja

Despite the opposition to the 2015 re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan, Leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, has said there is nothing to worry about, that the President has already won.

Dokubo-Asari’s statement is coming at a time opposition to the 2015 presidential ambition of Jonathan by the Alhaji Kawu Baraje-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is on the prowl.
He wondered why Jonathan would be talking and discussing with Governor Sule Lamido’s group whom he called political miscreants, people who do not have political value.

Dokubo-Asari said Lamido and his group were irrelevant to the realization of the president’s ambition, querying: “If Lamido could not deliver Jigawa State to Jonathan in 2011, of what relevance is he in realizing it in 2015?”
Reacting to Lamido’s interview in last week’s Sunday Sun in which the governor said, “Dokubo-Asari is a small boy, his entire clan, I don’t think they are up to one million people. If his entire clan are not up to one million people, you just ignore him,” Dokubo-Asari lampooned Lamido, saying that people like him should not even be listened to at all.

“Jonathan has already won. Whether they vote or they don’t vote, that is their business. He will win and if they like, they should go and hang themselves. For people like Sule Lamido to even be listened to, is very regrettable. This is a man who is living according to his antecedents; a man who rebelled against the greatest Northern political ideologue, Mallam Aminu Kano. These people have never been on the side of their people.
“I would forgive him because Ijaw people are not protesting about scientific census. It is people like Sule Lamido that are protesting that the chairman of the National Population Commission should be sacked. It clearly shows that they have something to hide.

“There is no where in the world where the arid part of the country is more populated. All over the world, population is at the coast. Population centers are at the coast, where there are economic activities. We live in a scientific world. So, when the time comes, he will know. We don’t even need to be 200 people to teach him a lesson and put sand in his mouth.

Jonathan must go –Shehu Sani

Jonathan must go –Shehu Sani
…Tells North to stop being parasite

From ABDULGAFAR ALABELEWE, Kaduna
Human Rights Activist and President of the Civil Rights Congress (CRC), Shehu Sani has that President Goodluck Jonathan must go by 2015, arguing that he has only succeeded in dividing Nigerians more than ever before.
He further contended that what the founding fathers struggled for is now being sold to a select few in the name of privatization.
Sani stated this while speaking at a public lecture with the theme, ‘Labour and Democracy: The Recipe for Good Governance’, to mark the formal commissioning of the new secretariat of the Kaduna State chapter of the Labour Party (LP).

“What we have witnessed so far in the 15 years of democracy is dynasty of wealth and power on one side and dynasty of the poor on the other side. Government has turned the state and local governments into personal property, and Nigeria is now in a state where people’s consciences are being bought over,” Sani said.
He, therefore, posited that if the rich and powerful could be united by a common goal, then the poor and downtrodden should equally be united by a common plight, adding that there should be an interlink between the masses of the south and those of the north.
“The widening gap between the rich and the poor and the continuing inequality between the rich and the poor is why Nigeria is still in its present state.

“You cannot revive our industries and the country when corrupt people are still in power, we must rally round and stand for the truth and justice because Nigeria is at cross road, we have wasted the first 100 years of our life as a country, we need to establish a firm foundation for our children.
“It is time to change our future by changing our leaders. The country needs salvation and redemption through a leader that will stand by the masses at all the times, we must be focused and united.” Sani said.
He also called on the northern region to stop being a parasite, depending on other peoples’ resources but instead should be united, focused and learn to feed itself just like it was done by the founding fathers.
Sani stressed that that there is no future in depending on natural resources alone, adding that there are no resources as valuable as population and landmark, which he stressed the northern region is abundantly blessed with.

Fresh Boko Haram attacks in Borno claim 27

Fresh Boko Haram attacks in Borno claim 27
From TIMOTHY OLANREWAJU, MAIDUGURI

Boko Haram insurgents have killed no fewer than 27 people in renewed attacks on villagers around the border town of Gamboru/Ngala in Borno State. A security source hinted that the attackers invaded Fulatari ward on Wednesday night and launched similar attack at Kanumburi ward at Gamboru town, Ngala Local Government, killing at least 27 people in the separate attacks.
The insurgents first attacked Fulatari ward on Wednesday about 11pm while another attack took place on Thursday about 10pm,” the source said, adding that the insurgents fired on residents and members of the youth vigilance  group while carrying out surveillance on the area. The source also disclosed that six people were killed while four others sustained injuries in Fulatari while 21 people including the Village Head of Gamboru “A” Lawan Ali Shettima died in the Kanumburi ward attack. Two others sustaining bullet injuries, the source who did not want his name in press claimed.
Chairman of Caretaker Committee of Gamboru/Ngala Local Government, Alhaji Modu Gana Bukar Sheriff who paid a sympathy visit to the victims and their families, expressed shock over the killing. He described the killing by the insurgents as crime against humanity, urging Nigerians to condemn it in its entirety.
The local government boss donated N500 and 200 bags of rice to the youth volunteers (Civilian JTF ) who also lost their colleagues in the attack. He assured them of support of the local government and the Borno State Government in returning peace to the area. He urged them not to be deterred by the incident or relent in their efforts to protect lives and property of the people. He said the injured persons were already receiving treatment in the hospital in the area.
The chairman said he had summoned security meeting with military authorities, divisional police officer (DPO) and traditional rulers in the local government area as part of measures to forestall occurrence of such attack again in the area.
Leader of the volunteers, Jibrilla Adamu thanked the council boss for his concern even as he assured that the killing of some of their colleagues would not dissuade them from their counter-insurgency campaigns, adding that they were determined to make the people of Borno enjoy peace as it were in the past.
Gamboru is located at the Nigeria-Cameroon border, about 135 kilometres to Maiduguri, Borno State capital and former stronghold of the armed sect.

African Oscars: Day America stood still for Nollywood

African Oscars: Day America stood still for Nollywood
By TOSIN AJIRIRE, just back from the United States

Nollywood shone like a million stars in far away United States of America penultimate Saturday as the Nollywood & African Film Critics’ Awards (NAFCA) popularly known as Africa Oscars held at the prestigious Warner Theatre in Washington DC.
Signs that all would be well with the 3-day event became vivid the previous day as movie stars and celebrities from different parts of Africa stormed the 5-Star Holiday Inn, Georgetown, Washington DC, which was also the venue of the African Film Summit and movie premieres.
The summit featured significant topics about the African cinema and was followed by an interactive panel of notable industry leaders. After the intellectual brainstorming, however, it was time for movie premiere as artistes and stakeholders trooped into the halls to catch their fun watching new films such as One Night in Vegas, Ninah’s Dowry, Nurses from Hell, American Mama and Gem of the Rainforest.
But then, at exactly 4pm on Saturday, the legendary Warner Theatre came alive with Hollywood and Nollywood stars strutting the red carpet, granting interviews and signing autographs. It was indeed a roll call of who is who. Gorgeously dressed and dazzling on the red carpet were Hollywood stars like Rollas Benz Antoine, Ebbe Bassey, KD Aubert, Jimmy Jean Louise, Sarodj Bertin, and Syr Law among others. And from Nollywood and Ghollywood came Lillian Bach, Vitalis Ndubuisi, John Dumelo, Majid Mitchel, Jennifer Oguzie, Abiola Ige, Benedict Johnson, John Uche and Montel Swaray (Liberia) among several others.
The awards proper commenced after a stage play that paraded some of the best in African drama. And to spice the night, there were musical performances by top artistes like Jerri Jhetto (USA), Koby Maxwell (Ghana), Katumbella (Angola), Kanja (Kenya), Tari (USA), Zonette Johnson (Liberia), Rebecca (UK), and Cesar Loboko (DR Congo).
In the General Category, Ninah’s Dowry ran away with the Best Film and Best Editing awards while Weekend Getaway’s cast of Ramsey Noauah and Genevieve Nnaji took the Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role awards respectively.
One Night in Vegas won Best Film in Diaspora and Best Cinematography awards with the films’ actor, Jimmy Jean Louis snatching the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in the Diaspora Category.
However, the major highlight of the 3-day event took place on Sunday when celebrities embarked a scenic tour of Washington DC. Movie stars virtually turned the luxury cruise ship tagged “The Spirit of Washington” into a dancing hall as they partied all day with plenty to eat and drink. Like Victor Olatoye, President of NAFCA earlier promised, the celebrity cruise was in deed an afternoon full of fun and excitement as it held on board of one of the most luxurious cruise ships in the District of Colombia.
Organized by Nollywood Film Critics USA, the official review organization for Nollywood and African movies, NAFCA popularly known as African Oscars, is one of the most prominent award ceremonies in America dedicated to Nollywood and African films in general.

Nigerian women march for help to wed in Zamfara

Brides at a mass wedding Kano, Nigeria - May 2012

Kano state organises mass weddings and pays all marriage-related expenses

A demand by 8,000 Nigerian women for help to get married will be considered, the Zamfara state government has said.

A group of women marched through Gusau city to hand in their petition to the religious police in the state which is partly governed by Islamic law.

Traditionally women need to provide furniture for the marital home, but this is too expensive for some of those seeking husbands.

The women belong to an association that acts as a match-making service.

The Zamfara Widows Association represents divorcees, widows and orphaned girls looking to find suitable Muslim husbands.
'Money-demanding traditions'
"Many of us cannot afford two meals in a day because there are no men to support us," Nigeria's Premium Times quotes the women on Thursday's march as saying.

Abdullahi Muhammad Shinkafi, the commissioner of religious affairs for Zamfara state government, told the BBC he understood their plight and need for financial assistance.

"What the widows are after is to get married... and in Nigeria in particular, there are a lot of traditions that are money-demanding in the process of getting married," he told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme.

"That is why they marched and are seeking for the government's attention."

He said their demands would be analysed as Zamfara did its best to help those living in poverty.

The BBC's Bashir Abdullahi says in Kano state, also in northern Nigeria, the board of the religious police, or Hisbah, often organises mass weddings for poor widows and divorcees.

The Hisbah pays for the wedding clothes, the bride price to be paid by the groom and the furniture to be provided by the bride.

But Mr Shinkafi said budgetary restraints might not lead to a speedy solution for the women.

"It is one thing to bring couples together, it is another to sustain their living," he said.

Boko Haram, 2015 election make SNC imperative – Afenifere

Afenifere Leader, Dr. Reuben Fasoranti
Pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, has stressed the urgency of convening a Sovereign National Conference in the face of recent threats to the unity of the country by the Boko Haram sect and ambitious politicians.
In a communique issued after an emergency meeting in Akure on Friday, the group observed that the threats from the Boko Haram sect to end democracy in Nigeria and the heating of the polity by groups in Nigeria had put a strain on the nation’s fault lines.
Although the issue of the eligibility of President Goodluck Jonathan to run for the 2015 general elections did not come as a specific item on the agenda of the meeting which had the Chairman, Reuben Fosaranti; Chief Seinde Arogbofa; Ayo Adebanjo, Jimi Agbaje and many others in attendance, it noted that the constitution guaranteed the right of any person to seek elective position in Nigeria.
The communique, which was titled, ‘Nigeria in Crisis and the Way Forward’, read by its Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, said, “The meeting held in the midst of low intensity warfare, being waged against the Nigerian state by the dreaded Boko Haram, with casualty figures currently higher than what is recorded in wars across the world.
“In the last few days, the leader of the Boko Haram, who was said to have been dead, came out again with his message – a promise that Boko Haram would be ending democracy in Nigeria as soon as practicable.
“The tension in Nigeria has further been heightened by the divisions in political parties, some on dangerous fault lines or regional lines and the overheating of the polity by politicians, ahead of the 2015 elections.
“These are warning signals. There is no doubt that Nigeria today has reached a point where the ethnic nationalities must sit at a Sovereign National Conference to discuss the state of the union and how to forge ahead as a united country based on the spirit of true federalism.”

Revenue crisis cripples states by Okonjo-Iweala

Okonjo-Iweala
The drop in the monthly revenue allocations by the Federal Government to the 36 states of the federation has affected the finances and smooth-running of various governments.
Investigations by Saturday Punch  showed that the shortfall in revenue  allocation to states by the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee which started three months ago, had disrupted payment of salaries, pensions and financing of government projects in many states.
A cross-section of states that spoke with Saturday PUNCH on Thursday, lamented that the shortfall in the allocations and non-disbursement of full allocations as at when due, had reduced the financial capacity of their governments, thus making it impossible for them to execute some vital projects.
While blaming the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation for not remitting enough revenue to the coffers of the Federal Government, the states urged  government to ensure adequate, transparent and accountable revenue remittance by the NNPC.
But as the states lament the toll of the shortage on their administrative efforts, President Goodluck Jonathan has intervened with a view to finding a quick solution to the problem.
Saturday Punch  learnt on Thursday that  the President  had approved  a sum of  N75bn to  be immediately made available to the FAAC to augment revenue shortfall for July.
This development was confirmed on Thursday by the Chairman, Forum of Commissioners of FAAC, Mr Timothy Odaah, during a telephone interview with one of  our correspondents in Abuja.
He said the amount would be added to the N45bn already provided by the Ministry of Finance to make up the N115bn arrears for the Month of July.
About N336bn is being owed the three tiers of government as arrears of revenue shortfall owing to persistent decline in oil production and revenue.
Odaah said  though the timely intervention of the President would  help cushion the impact of the problem,  state governments  still believed  the President was not well briefed on what was happening.
In Plateau State, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Yiljap Abraham, told Saturday PUNCH  that the shortage had affected all cash-flow of salaries, wages, contractual obligations, security and the smooth running of government at all levels.
Abraham, who spoke with one of our correspondents, however, assured civil servants that the state government would ensure payment of salaries immediately the shortfalls were released.
He said, “Naturally, the non-disbursement of funds  and shortfalls in federal allocations from the Federal Government  affects all aspects of cash-flow such as salaries and wages, contractual obligations, handling of security problems and the smooth running of government at all levels.’’
He, however, said, “Sad as the situation may be, Governor Jonah Jang has always ensured prudent management of state resources.”
  Akwa Ibom
In Akwa Ibom State, the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Bassey Akpan, said  that the state government got a loan of N80bn from the Standard Chartered  Bank of London, not for the purpose of  financing  new projects, but to offset the previously acquired credit facility of N50bn from the United Bank for Africa Plc.
He explained that the state government had already met with the state House of Assembly on the need to write off the UBA loan facility which attracted an interest rate of 18.5 per cent per annum.
He stated that the UBA facility was a bridge to support the state government  to fulfil its financial obligations as at the time the loan was taken.
Inquiries by our correspondent, however, showed that the state government  was  not owing workers’ salaries.
He said, “When we consummated the UBA facility, we were also working with international financial institutions. The essence of this loan is to enable us  to bring down the cost of governance for the people. We have to do this based on the interest that has been shown by  the international financial community based on the performance of the governor.”
Kwara State
In Kwara State, the governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, said the dwindling revenue from the federal coffers had impacted negatively on  the state government as it had prevented the state from embarking on projects that required huge funding.
He attributed the dwindling revenue  to a shortfall in the state’s allocation from the federation account which he said arose because of the non-augmentation of shortfalls of revenue by either  the FAAC or the Ministry of Finance.
“The state government has been suffering  as a result of the unwillingness of the appropriate agencies to augment the shortfalls of the Federal Government revenue.
“The problem has lasted for about three months now, FAAC just explained the reasons for the non-augmentation of shortfalls of revenue to us in September.’’
He stated that the state was still pressuring the relevant agency of  the Federal Government to augment the revenue shortfall, expressing the hope that the state would soon succeed.
According to him, the shortfalls may not be unconnected with the low remittances from the revenue collecting agencies of the Federal Government.
Ahmed called for more transparency in collecting and accounting for revenue from the Federal Government collecting agencies, especially the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
The state Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Demola Banu, told Saturday PUNCH  that the state was only meeting its monthly financial obligations on payment of salaries, pensions, interests  and other recurrent expenditures that could not be differed.
Banu said, “We are facing  challenges. But workers’ salaries are being paid.  There is never a time that we did not pay salaries. But there could be other expenses that we need to make that could be deferred. But generally it has not affected us drastically.”
Both Ahmed and Banu declined to provide information on  the state’s total  loan obligations to its creditors.
Osun State
In Osun State, the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Wale Bolorunduro, could not be reached to say how much the state was being owed by the Federal Government.
Also, calls put across to his telephone indicated that it was out of network coverage area.
However, a top civil servant, who pleaded not to be named, because he was not authorised to speak on the issue,  said that the state government had been paying salaries despite the shortfall in federal allocations.
He said that the government had been using the state’s reserve to pay workers’ salaries, adding that the reserve would soon be empty.
He said, “The allocation shortfall is biting harder and I know that all the states are feeling the heat. The Federal Government is owing all the states N261bn. There was N121bn  deficit in June and N140bn deficit in July.”
“Look around, you will see that some states have not been paying their workers since the shortfall started in June. Many will join the league of such states if the shortfall continues.”
He said that the other two tiers of government would soon be prostrate if the shortfall continued.
He said that Nigerians should appeal to the Federal Government  to pay the money, saying otherwise many states would no longer be able to pay workers’ salaries.
Enugu State
In Enugu State, government kept mum on how the state was coping with the non-payment of arrears of allocations and  financial commitments to banks, contractors, among other financial issues affecting the state.
The state Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Godson Nnadi, on Thursday said, “I am not permitted to speak on any of such matters without the approval of my principal.”
Nnadi  pleaded with our correspondent to call the Commissioner for  Information, Mr. Chucks Ugwoke, “as he is the only one empowered by the State Executive Council to speak to journalists on any matter.”
However, SATURDAY PUNCH could not get the comments of  Ugwoke as he  did not pick several calls to his mobile phone. He also did not respond to text messages sent to his phone.
At the Enugu State Budget Office, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Casmir Ugwu, was unavailable to speak to our correspondent.
Rivers State
In Rivers State, the  Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Chamberlain Peterside, said the state had yet to receive allocation for September 2013.
Peterside also lamented that the state was short-paid for the month of August.
According to him, while the state was expecting N19bn, the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission allocated only N14bn to it  last month.
Peterside, however, explained that the state was finding a way out of the problem through its internally generated revenue.
“It (non-payment of monthly allocation) is the reality we are facing. We are even in a better shape than most other states.
“We have been able to fall back on our internally- generated revenue and that is why our situation is different from that of other states,” the commissioner said.
Describing the challenge as a national problem, Peterside pointed out that  Rivers State had been able to pay contractors, adding that workers’ salaries had been processed and will soon be paid.
He said, “We have been able to pay contractors and that is why you can see them working at different locations in the state. The September salaries of civil servants have been processed and they will soon be paid.”
He, however, expressed the need to embrace transparency in the developments within the oil and gas sector.
Bayelsa State
In Bayelsa State, the Commissioner for Information,  Mr. Markson Fefegha, declined to comment on the inquiries by our correspondent. He said, “Those are questions reserved for those who attend Federal Allocation Committee meeting or officials of the Federal Ministry of Finance.”
Odaah said FAAC was  owing states N336bn. This amount, according to him, is made up of N128bn for  June; 115bn for July while shortfall for the month of August was put at N93bn.
Going by the payment of the N115bn, the arrears have now dropped to N221bn
Odaah said the inability of the Federal Government to pay the N115bn arrears which was already  approved in the committee’s July meeting was the major bone of contention at its September meeting.
This, he explained, led to a walkout of the commissioners at both the committee’s meeting held on September 13 and 23 respectively.
The Federal Government  had during the meeting provided  the sum of N548.393bn as statutory revenue for the three tiers of government for the month of September. This was rejected  by the members of the committee.
Odaah told our correspondent that the major reason for the rejection was that the approved N115bn July shortfall was not provided for.
He said, “In July, we approved that the arrears of N115bn be paid to us. We met in August and nothing was done about it. In September when the meeting was held again, they still haven’t paid.
“So when we met in September, instead of paying us the arrears, they told us that from September, what we will be sharing is  actual instead of budgeted revenue. This made us to demand the clearing of all our backlog of N336bn and this was what caused the stalemate.
“But now the President has approved the release of N75bn to complement the N45bn already released by the Ministry of finance to make up the July shortfall of N115bn. We are grateful to him for his prompt intervention.”
Odaah dismissed reports  that the action of the states was political and insisted that the states needed to get their allocation to carry out developmental projects.
“Our position is not political. We are a patriotic forum and we are doing this to help in developing our states. We are representatives of our respective governors.
In recent times, there had been persistent decline in gross federally collected revenue accruing to the federation account.
The Federal Government had projected monthly earnings of N702.54bn in the 2013 budget, but it only surpassed that target once during the first seven months of this year, earning N651.26bn in January; N571.7bn in February; and N595.71bn in March.

Oprah Winfrey says she'll leave this earth as a 'never married' woman

Billionaire talk show legend and actress Oprah Winfrey 59, has been dating Stedman Graham, 62, since 1986. That's 27 years - longer than a lot of marriages. Oprah said in an interview recently that although she considered marriage after she attended Tina Turner's wedding in Switzerland in July, she's pretty sure she will leave the world as a woman who 'never got married'

When asked if she would leave earth as a “never-married” woman, Oprah made her feelings very clear. “Yes,” she told Access Hollywood. “Yeah, I think that’s my final answer.”
“I think that it’s interesting that you would ask it because I thought about it again at Tina Turner’s wedding. Because Tina was like, ‘Oprah, you need to do this. You need to do it.’ I was just thinking, ‘Well, OK, would things really be different?’ And no, I don’t think so. If you ever interviewed him (Stedman), he would tell you that had we married, we would not be together today, because he’s a traditional man and this is a very untraditional relationship.”
Oprah also explained that she couldn’t be a wife because the word holds responsibilities she doesn’t feel capable of handling.

Kenyan mall ablaze as names of terrorists and victims are released

Kenyan special forces were today locked in a fight to the death with Islamic terrorists who have been barricaded inside a Nairobi mall with up to 40 hostages since Saturday.

Witnesses described hearing four large explosions at the Westgate Shopping Centre followed by fierce gun fire after the military tried to break the three day siege by gaining access from the roof.

It is feared that some of the gunmen inside may have blown themselves up, though a Kenyan government minister said that militants had set fire to some mattresses in a supermarket as a decoy.

'We have an idea who this people are and they are clearly a multinational collection from all over the world,' he said. We have an idea who they are, their nationality and even the number.  We are fighting global terrorism here and we have sufficient intel (intelligence) to suggest that.'

A Twitter account claiming to represent Al Shabaab yesterday claimed that terrorists from seven nations are involved in the attack, including the U.S., Britain and Canada.

The HSM Press Office account, which has been suspended twice, claimed the group were:

Ronaldo extends Real contract

Ronaldo
Real Madrid have moved to tie Cristiano Ronaldo to the club until the end of the 2017/18 season by agreeing a three-year contract extension with the prolific Portugal forward.
The announcement of the deal on Sunday ended speculation about a possible return to Manchester United in 2015 when his previous deal expires. Ronaldo left the English Premier League club in 2009 to join Real for what was then a world-record fee of €94m ($125m).
Big-spending Real president Florentino Perez and the 28-year-old Ronaldo signed the new contract at the club’s Bernabeu stadium and appeared before the media at a glitzy ceremony on the giant arena’s VIP tribune.
Neither Ronaldo, who said 2018 could mark the end of his career, nor Perez provided details about his salary, but Spanish media reported that his net annual wage would rise to €17m, making him one of the world’s best-paid players.
Wearing a dark blue jacket, light shirt and blue patterned tie and with a jewelled stud glittering in each ear, Ronaldo admitted there had been interest from other clubs, including Qatar-owned Ligue 1 side Paris St Germain.
He was also asked about United and appeared to rule out a return to the city where he spent six years after joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2003.

ASUU strike: Transporters, traders lament losses, seek solution

OAU car pack. Inset: Business centres in one of the universities
Some transporters, traders and others who provide services on university campuses have lamented the negative impact of the strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities three months ago.
They said the strike was not favourable to their businesses, adding that the strike had reduced their sales and income.
Our correspondent, who visited the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, University of Lagos, Lagos State, and the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, observed that activities in the universities had been paralysed.
Shops, where photocopies and printing works were made, were closed. Few shops that were open operated their services at a high cost.
When our correspondent visited OAU on Friday, it was gathered that traders at the Awolowo, Angola, Moremi and Mozambique Halls of the university had not been opening for business since the strike started.
A motorist, identified simply as Baba Gbayi, told our correspondent that some of them were forced to stop operating few weeks after the strike began because of low patronage.
He said, “This strike period is tough for us. Most people who own buses are no longer coming. Only those of us that got our buses on hire purchase are forced to come to work because we have to complete our payment. There is nothing  more killing than this strike because since it has started we no longer see passengers as before.”
Another motorist, Chinedu Akpan, said even the few students on the campus were not willing to board commercial buses because they lacked cash.
Akpan said, “I am praying that the strike ends soon. I have three children and two of my siblings are also living with me. We have been struggling to eat. By the time schools resume from holidays, it will be worse. My prayer is that the strike would be called off before they resume.
“Another thing is that the students are also broke so they prefer to trek. Some of them will even be negotiating the transport fare because they know that we have no choice.”
A trader, identified simply as Iya Sanjo, said, “You can see that none of us opened. The strike is really disastrous as the school management has sent some of the students home. If we must open, we have to use the generator which is more expensive especially when customers are not many.”
At UNILAG, traders at the car park opposite the Mass Communication Department and Jaja Hall opened shops but lamented losses.
A motorist, who drives UNILAG shuttle bus, described the strike as a punishment for the operators.
“I urge the Federal Government and ASUU to meet and find a lasting solution to this strike. They are only punishing us because they collect their salaries while we cannot live without our daily earnings. Now that there are no passengers, how do they want us to survive? The Federal Government and ASUU should reach a compromise,” he said.
A trader, who preferred anonymity, expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government and ASUU, saying, “They have kept us in an unfavourable condition while they continue with their lives. I have to open partially so that the perishable goods in my shop won’t get spoilt. We sell at low prices, yet there is low patronage.”
The situation at the OOU was not different from that of OAU and UNILAG. But the fate of the service providers was made more precarious because there are no students’ hostels at OOU.
Some food sellers at the university’s permanent site in Ago Iwoye told our correspondent that they currently operate skeletal services to cater for few students and other people who strayed into the campus to check what was happening.
One of them, Mrs. Nonye Sunday, said, “It is obvious that the strike is not doing us any good. Of course, the non-academic staff are around, but because of this strike, students no longer come like before. Even the workers that are in school leave early and many of them do not eat our food.”
A mechanic in the university town, Taiwo Mecho, said the students formed the bulk of his patrons, “and since their lecturers are on srike, we no longer see them.”

Two girls die in Enugu river

Sympathisers at the scene
Two girls lost their lives while swimming in the Asata River along Bisalla Road in Enugu metropolis, Enugu State, on Saturday evening.
While the corpse of one of the victims, Chidera Nwekwe, was recovered hours after the incident, the body of the other victim had not been located as of Sunday afternoon. Her identity remained a mystery.
Eyewitnesses at the riverside told our correspondent that the victims were hawkers on the popular Bisalla Road/New Haven junction, about 800 metres from the Enugu State Government House.
It was learnt that they had gone swimming with some of the destitute persons who usually begged for alms on Bisalla Road, but drowned since they were inexperienced swimmers.
Chukwuebuka Nwekwe, the elder brother of one of the victims, said he was shocked that Chidera could go swimming when she had never attempted such.
He said they hailed from Akpugo Village in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to him, the last time he saw her was on Saturday morning, shortly before he left for work.
Chukwuebuka said, “She was only 13 and had never tried swimming. I feel so sad that she had to die this way. She would have been alive if these people who beg for alms on the road had not lured her and her friend to swim at the river.
“The painful thing about the whole situation is that we are orphans and we have no one to turn to.”
The Enugu State Police Command said it was unaware of the incident. However, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said the command would immediately mobilise its officers to the scene.
He said, “Thank you for informing us. I will alert the command and we will mobilise our men to the scene right away. I will get back to you as soon as we are readyto make a statement.”

Vatican To Discuss Marriage For Catholic Priests

  pop

In what is an unprecedented move, the Vatican has opened the door to the possibility of Catholic priests being allowed to marry.

For centuries Catholic Church tradition has required celibacy from priests. The Canon Law of the church states, “Clerics are obliged to observe perfect and perpetual continence for the sake of the kingdom of heaven, and therefore are bound to celibacy, which is a special gift of God by which sacred ministers can adhere more easily to Christ with an undivided heart and are able to dedicate themselves more freely to the service of God and humanity.”
However, News Express on Thursday reported that Archbishop Pietro Parolin, the incoming Number Two leader in the Catholic Church when be becomes secretary of state next month, had declared that priestly vow of celibacy derived from an age-old rule but was not Catholic dogma.
“It’s not a dogma of the Church and it can be discussed because it’s an ecclesiastical tradition,” Archbishop Parolin told El Universal in Venezuela, where he is completing his term as Papal Nuncio.
This has been interpreted to mean that the church under reformist-minded Pope Francis I would welcome married priesthood if most Catholics so desire.
The number of priests has been declining steadily partly because of the rule on celibacy. In the United States alone, about 30,000 priests have left because they wanted to pursue a relationship.
“I think it would be an enormously welcome conversation,” Thomas Groome, a professor of theology at Boston College, USA, told interviewers. “I think Catholics, certainly American Catholics, but Catholics of the world, have been waiting for this conversation.”
Groome said that the idea of complete celibacy among the clergy only started to become standard practice in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries.
He added, “As far as we can tell from the Gospels, all of the apostles were married, with the possible exception of John.”

18 killed in fresh Boko Haram attack in Borno

18 killed in fresh Boko Haram attack in Borno
No fewer than 18 people including members of youth vigilantes were yesterday, killed and scores of others injured in Benisheik, Borno State in a coordinated attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.
Survivors, who spoke to journalists from their hospital beds, recounted how the insurgents stormed Benisheik, headquarters, of Kaga Local Government, in the wee hours. They said the insurgents targeted the youth volunteers popularly called Civilian JTF, who had been conducting surveillance and security checks in the area.
Sources said the insurgents disguised as members of the Civilian JTF to infiltrate the youth vigilantes, unknown to the youths that they were Boko Haram. “Boko Haram with sophisticated arms, opened fire on us killing 12 of our members. We were able to kill five of them and took possession of their four AK 47,” Zannah Fannami, one of the wounded Civilian JTF members said on his hospital bed. He said the insurgents stormed the town at about 12:30a.m yesterday.
Another member of the vigilance group, Muhammed Abuwar, who also sustained injury on his arm and leg, said security forces had agreed to watch and lay ambush against Boko Haram, but lamented that the army troops could not come to their rescue while the attack lasted.
Spokesman of the newly created Nigeria Army 7 Division, Maiduguri, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, said information available to the Division revealed that some suspected members of the Boko Haram sect, who disguised as  members of the youth vigilance group attacked Benisheikh in Kaga Local Government Area at about 12:30 am yesterday. He, however, said six of the youth vigilance group were killed in an ensuing confrontation with the sect.
“Some elements of 21 Brigade troop have been drafted to the area and the attack had been repelled. Troops were still combing the area in search for fleeing terrorists,” he said. Musa however, promised to furnish journalists with further details as more facts emerge on the incident.
Commenting on the blocking of the road by some aggrieved youths in Benisheik, he explained that the army had cleared the road which is a major highway that links Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, with Maiduguri, capital of Borno State. He said normalcy had returned to the area.
Benisheik is located west of Maiduguri and about 72 kilometers away from the capital city. It has also witnessed similar attacks by the insurgents in the past. The youth vigilantes had in recent time, mounted heavy surveillance and checks in the town as motorists and commercial vehicles were usually compelled to disembark for routine checks.

Education ministry website suspended amid ASUU strike

INTERNET PUNCH illustration
The website of the Federal Ministry of Education, www.fme.gov.ng, is down.  Although it could not be ascertained how long it has been down, our correspondent, who visited the website on Monday, had stumbled on the message, “This account has been suspended.’’
No information was placed on the site to tell visitors that it has moved to another domain and no link was provided to redirect those in search of information about the educational system to a new one.
Besides, another website attributed to the ministry online, fmegovng.org, is also “ailing’’ as the message on the site read, “This domain name will be on Godaddy Auctions soon.”
Visitors to any of the two portals in search of reports related to the ongoing industrial action by university teachers may be disappointed as the ministry literally has no official website to inform interested members of the public.
A check on some education parastatals in the country shows that some of them are fast taking a cue from the supervisory ministry that is saddled with the responsibility for defining and shaping the structure of the education system in Nigeria.
For instance, a visit to the website of the National Commission for Colleges of Education, www.ncceonline.org, showed that the information on the site was far from being rich. The “About Us’’ is the only section that the website has, while the welcome page contains two articles which only informed visitors on how to go about securing loan to study in higher institutions of learning abroad.
No mention was made of its activities, pertaining to the regulation of colleges of education in the country, as well as the issuance of the National Certificate of Education   – the minimum certificate that qualifies one to teach in the country.
The National Educational Research and Development Council’s website, www.nerdc.gov.ng, which prides itself as the “think-tank of Nigerian education’’  is only a little better than that of the NCCE.
The first information that caught the attention of the correspondent on the welcome page of the website on Monday was the date on it. The date on the site simply read Thursday, September 05, 2013.
A click on the “Achievement’’ section of the site, which was expected to give the track record of the council from 2005 to 2012, showed it was empty. The message on it read, “This page is awaiting update.” A similarly information was posted on the “Press Release” section.
Besides, the website managers did not deem it fit to input the contact person and phone number of the designatedofficial at its area office on 8, Orlu Street, Garki, Abuja as they simply left the spaces meant for it blank.
While NERDC made an appreciable effort to make its digital engagement social with its presence on Facebook, it was observed that its account on the social service was also largely neglected. In the course of this year, the handlers of the Facebook page had only managed to post messages on it four times.
The National Library of Nigeria, created to serve as the nation’s “intellectual store house and databank,” has a rather poor outlook online.  It was observed that information pertaining to its services, such as bibliography control, cataloguing in publication, training and skills development, were not available on its website, www.nln.gov.ng.
Besides, all the links to all its social media pages, with the exception of its Facebook page were broken and did not connect to the social accounts they were supposed to.
But while it appears that the NCCE and NERDC may have taken after the Federal Ministry of Education in terms of managing its digital presence, some of the parastatals under it are putting in efforts to have functional online tracks.
The National Mathematical Centre has a functional and updated website. The website, nmcabuja.org, does not only appear to fall into the good books of its managers, but it also carry visitors along with its upcoming events. Checks on the website offered information about conferences, workshops and seminars lined up.
However, the NMC may need to take advantage of one or a number of social networks to engage its audience with a view to giving adequate publicity to its activities.
Essentially, the Federal Ministry may need to learn a lesson or two from the Ghanaian Ministry of Education that has a regularly updated and fully functional portal for sundry issues bordering on education in the West African nation.
Apart from being up-to-date, the portal, www.moe.gov.gh, contains requisite statistics and other resources that could help local stakeholders, as well as international organisations deliver on key educational indicators in the country’s various educational sectors.

Students don’t want us to end strike – ASUU

ASUU president, Fagge
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it is continuing its nationwide strike on the advice of university students.
In a telephone interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, the President of the union, Dr. Isa Fagge, said  students were tired of the incessant industrial actions by the university lecturers due to the Federal Government’s failure to implement the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009.
Fagge said the union had decided to heed the advice of the students to continue the strike until the Federal Government fully implemented the agreement.
“Our students have come out to say they don’t want us to call off the strike until the Federal Government answers us, because they don’t want us to call off now and later we go back to strike again. So, we are heeding the advice of our students,” he said.
On the complaint by the Federal Government that it lacked the funds to implement the agreement, Fagge said it was not all about money, noting that government did not need funds to start implementing some parts of the agreement.
“There are issues and agreement they can implement without money. Why don’t they begin with those ones?” he asked.
He added that it was unfortunate that the government had pulled out of dialogue with ASUU, stating that the union would not be intimidated.
He said, “Now, government has pulled out of the dialogue. We thought we were the ones going on strike, but now government has also gone on strike.”
Last Thursday, university students under the auspices of the National Association of Nigerian Students reportedly staged a peaceful protest in Ado-Ekiti and flayed the Federal Government for failing to honour the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009.
The students, who were from public universities, threatened to disrupt activities of private universities, adding that the government was not bothered about their plight because children of government officials were studying either in private universities or studying overseas.
The university lecturers began an indefinite strike on July 1 and have been demanding full implementation of the agreement ASUU had with the Federal Government in 2009, which among other things include the UNESCO-recommended 26 per cent budgetary allocation for education. However, the government said it could not implement the agreement, and is seeking re-negotiation.
The Federal Government, last Wednesday, accused ASUU of being unrealistic by continuing its nationwide strike and asked it to rethink its demands, considering other commitments government has.
The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who gave government’s position on the strike when he briefed journalists at the end of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council, said apart from security, education was one of the sectors the government had expended a lot of money on.

Super Eagles striker, Ahmed Musa's family attacked by armed men

Eleven armed men stormed the family home of Super Eagles striker, Ahmed Musa, in Jos yesterday Wednesday September 4th. Fortunately he wasn't home as he is currently camped in Calabar with other team mates ahead of the Nigeria-Malawi encounter for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

According to what Ahmed told the press today, the armed men stormed his home around 8:30pm last night, and demanded for his wife and son. Fortunately his wife and son had traveled earlier to Kano. When the men didn't get Musa's wife and kid, they turned to his other family members, beating them mercilessly. Fortunately no one was killed but the men went away with valuables.

Musa's mum had to be treated in the hospital for injuries she sustained during the robbery incident. He said his family is doing well now.

Stop playing politics with education of students,Suswam tells ASUU

Stop playing politics with education of students, Suswam tells ASUU
From ROSE EJEMBI, Makurdi
Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam has described as impracticable, the insistence by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that its members would not go back to class until all their demands as contained in the 2009 agreement are met.
The governor urged the leadership of ASUU to stop playing politics with the education of Nigerian students, saying there was no basis for it to remain on strike when government was doing everything to meet its demand.
Suswam, who is the chairman of Universities Needs Assessment and Implementation Committee made the observation yesterday when he played host to the National Union of Benue State Students (NUBESS) at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Makurdi.
While noting that the Federal Government (FG) had done everything that needed to be done to ensure that the strike was called off, the governor lamented that the leadership of ASUU was misleading the public about the true state of the issues involved.
The governor, who averred that state universities had no reason being on strike, posited that N100 billion had been shared on pro-rata basis to all universities out of which the Benue State University (BSU) got N950 million.
He maintained that the N30 billion released as End Allowance was to be shared among federal universities only and wondered why state universities had continued to be on strike.
“Benue State University has no business being on strike because out of the N100 billion that was released by the Federal Government, it got N950 million. ASUU should stop playing politics with the education of Nigerian students.”
He regretted that despite the fact that the Federal Government had shifted grounds to ensure amicable resolution of the problem, ASUU had refused to shift ground on the matter and called on Nigerians to engage ASUU with a view to making sure that the strike was called off.
Earlier, President of NUBESS, Matthew Mamwo, who commended the governor for his efforts at ensuring that the FG/ASUU rift was quickly resolved, appealed to ASUU to have pity on the students and call off the strike.

Corporal shoots ASP dead during argument at station

Olusoji
When on April 6, 2013, Jane and Olusoji Elegbede got married in Lagos State, their joy knew no bounds.
Although Olusoji was a policeman serving in Yobe State, which is fraught with security challenges, Jane did not mind living there with him.
Their plan was to settle down, have children and grow old together.
Unfortunately, this was not to be as Olusoji, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, was gunned down by a police corporal  in Gashua Bade Local Government, Yobe State, while on duty less than five months after their wedding.
Olusoji’s widow, who spoke while fighting back tears, told PUNCH Metro that she was still in shock over the incident.
Narrating what led to her 39-year-old husband’s killing, Jane said her husband, who was the Administration Officer at Gashua Police Division, was killed by a 53-year-old corporal, Andrew Bitus.
She said, “The station is situated in a barracks and we all live in the barracks. The corporal (Bitus), was dating an elderly woman and they had a quarrel. Bitus wanted to part ways with the woman, so he told her to refund the money he had spent on her but the woman refused.
“The corporal dragged the woman to the station but the Divisional Police Officer intervened, saying it was a civil case and told the corporal to take the matter to the court.
“The DPO travelled some days later, on August 30, 2013 to be precise. The corporal arrested the woman again.
“My husband, who was the most senior officer in the station at the time, reiterated what the DPO said and ordered the corporal to let the woman  go.
“The corporal, instead, started harassing the woman at the station. My husband then told other policemen at the station to register a case against the corporal for his behaviour.”
Jane said the corporal became infuriated and insulted her husband who was over 10 years younger than him.
She said in the ensuing argument, the corporal brought out his rifle and shot the deceased many times.
She said, “I was in my house when I heard gunshots. Initially I thought it was Boko Haram members that were attacking the station. It was a few minutes later that someone informed me that my husband had been shot.
“When I got to the station, I was told by policemen that the corporal brought out his gun and shot my husband in front of the counter. My husband was said to have fled, but the corporal chased him and rained bullets on him. I met my husband in a pool of blood.
“When I asked why they could not stop the trigger-happy policeman, they told me that they had to run for cover for fear of being hit by the bullets.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that Olusoji was rushed to the General Hospital, Gashua, and was taken to the theatre where a surgery was done to remove the bullets from his body.
“The doctors told me that he survived and was going to be taken to the Federal Medical Centre, however, they later opened up to me that he died during the surgery,” she said.
Jane insisted that the corporal must be brought to book, adding that her husband was not involved in any love affair with the woman who was at the centre of the feud.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the killer policeman had been dismissed and was being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Damaturu.
The unidentified woman, who was being harassed by the corporal, had also been arrested.
A cousin of the deceased, Kunle Bajela, said apart from getting justice for the killing, the family wanted his widow to be well taken care of by the police authorities.
“My cousin died in active service and we want those who depended on him for their upkeep are not neglected by the police,” he said.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, told our correspondent on the telephone that he would call later to brief him on the incident

Fashola bars Molue from Lagos Island

Fashola bars Molue from Lagos Island
The Lagos State Government has barred big commercial buses, popularly called Molue, from operating on Lagos Island.
The government explained that it also did not expect the buses to ply  Third Mainland, Eko and Carter bridges, adding that operating in the Central Business District had become history for the buses.
A statement from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority on Thursday said the move was to ensure adequate monitoring of the operations of commercial vehicles and compliance with traffic rules and regulations.
The statement said the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Babatunde Edu, stated this during a stakeholders’ meeting with branch chairmen of the Lagos Urban Bus Owners Association of Nigeria, the operators of Molue buses in the state .
Edu said, “This directive had become effective since August, 2012, but Lagos State Government, being a responsive and responsible government which believes in enlightenment before enforcement, decided to shift the enforcement to September 2013.
“LASTMA officials have been mandated to ensure strict compliance and impound any Molue that is found to have flouted the directive after September 4, 2013.”
The General Manager told the operators that the government had not banned them, therefore they could perform their operations in any other parts of the state apart from the restricted areas.
Edu said, “The government has not banned the operations of Molue in the state. Rather, it has restricted their operations to areas like Orile, Iyana Ipaja, Mile 2 and Mile 12.”
He said the prohibited routes included Iddo, Ebute Ero, Apongbon, Obalende, Idumota and CMS.
The leader of the team, Mr. Taofeek Adesina, commended the government for its effort to restore sanity and order in the state and pledged the readiness of his union to support the new cause.

Tommy Morrison, former heavyweight champion, dies at 44

Tommy Morrison (L), who died late Sunday, jokes with George Foreman in 1993. (AP)
Tommy Morrison, the power-punching heavyweight with the charismatic smile and movie-star good looks, died late Sunday in an Omaha, Neb., hospital. He was 44.
No official cause of death was released, but Morrison's wife, Trisha, told MMADirt.com that he died of respiratory and metabolic acidosis and multiple organ failure. She said Morrison had Miller Fisher Syndrome/Guillain Barre Syndrome.
But Morrison was discovered to be HIV positive prior to a scheduled February 1996 bout with Arthur Weathers in Las Vegas, when he was 27. His mother, Diana, told ESPN.com's Elizabeth Merrill last month that her son was dying of AIDS.
Morrison's longtime promoter, Tony Holden, confirmed the death to the Tulsa World, but declined to speculate on cause.
Morrison in 2011 (Getty)Morrison, who played Tommy Gunn in the movie "Rocky V," was 48-3-1 with 42 knockouts. He won the WBO heavyweight title in 1993, when he defeated the legendary George Foreman.
Morrison, who had one of boxing's best left hooks, had other notable wins over Razor Ruddock, Carl "The Truth" Williams, Pinklon Thomas and James "Quick" Tillis. He lost to Lennox Lewis, Ray Mercer and Michael Bentt.
After he learned of Nevada's HIV diagnosis, Morrison had his own doctor perform a test that showed that he was HIV positive. He held a news conference in Jay, Okla., that was televised live on ESPN and blamed it on a promiscuous lifestyle.
I lived a permissive, fast and reckless lifestyle. I hope I can serve as a warning that living this lifestyle can really lead to only one thing and that's misery. . . . I've never been so stupid in my life. I thought I was bulletproof and I'm not.
If getting up here and confronting this problem out in the open can get just one person out there to take a more responsible attitude toward sex, then I would feel I scored my biggest knockout ever.
I thought the real danger of contracting this rested in the arms of those who subjected themselves to a certain kind of lifestyle--addicts who share needles and people who practice a homosexual lifestyle.
I honestly believed I had a better chance of winning the lottery than of contracting this disease. I've never been so wrong in my life. The only sure prevention of this disease is abstinence.
This disease does not discriminate, and that is very, very clear to me now. It doesn't matter if you live in a drug-infested ghetto in New York City or if you live on a ranch in Jay, Oklahoma. This is something that can jump up and bite you no matter where you are at. And it doesn't matter what color you are.
But later in his life, Morrison disputed the contention that he had HIV or that he later contracted AIDS, and he actually boxed twice, once each in 2006 and in 2007.
Last month, Merrill wrote a compelling story about Morrison in which she noted his mother, Diana, believed his death was near.
According to that Aug. 23 ESPN story, Morrison was being kept alive with a feeding tube and a ventilator.
She says he has full-blown AIDS. She believes he's in his final days. His skin is jaundiced; his liver is failing. "He's too far gone," she says, flashing an incredulous look when asked whether he could recover. "He's in the end stages. That's it." She says Morrison has been bedridden for a year, can't speak and is being kept alive with the help of a feeding tube and a ventilator.
According to MMADirt, Morrison's death came at 11:50 p.m. CT on Sunday.
